Our Focus on Quality: More Than Just Coffee
When we first opened the doors to Dad and the Frog Café, it was just a tiny 12 seat space serving locals their morning coffee and a quick bite. We kept prices low, thinking it would give people the “best deal.” But here’s the truth, it left us with little room to grow or improve.
Eventually, we asked ourselves: What does it actually mean to be the best cafe in Surry Hills? The answer wasn’t about being the cheapest, it was about giving our guests an experience they’d want to return to.
From Price to Value: The Shift That Changed Everything
Low prices meant we could barely reinvest in the things that matter - our team, our equipment, and our space. We couldn’t afford to evolve.
So we made the switch. We started pricing our breakfast, brunch, and lunch dishes based on the value we wanted to provide. We thought: If someone chooses to spend their free time and hard-earned money with us, we owe them more than just a meal.
That mindset changed everything. Guests began noticing the difference, from better seating and flow in our indoor and outdoor areas, to upgraded equipment and even new training programs for our team.
What Quality Looks Like at Dad and the Frog
Coffee with purpose: Our barista's are trained to be consistent across the team, this means our grinder is adjusted and each dose of ground beans is weighed.
Food you’ll crave: Whether it's our chilli scrambled eggs, brekkie rolls, or nourishing salads, everything is made to feel like a treat. We make our sauces and fermented ingredients in house to make sure you're getting fresh, unique and qulaity flavours.
Service that feels like home: Our team is trained to make every guest feel welcome, seen, and well looked after. Each team member receives our SOPs, with formal training and consistent feedback.
Spaces that grow with you: Our little café has expanded, with cozy indoor corners and dog-friendly alfresco dining that invites you to linger. Like many of you the little designer in me has some exciting ideas to give our space another lift.

We’re not here to pump out $5 coffees with no soul. We’re here for the locals, the regulars, the brunch lovers, the catch-up crews, the freelancers, the mums with prams, and everyone in between who wants a real experience in a local café that values them.
